Leprosy is not contagious. You can be exposed only if you are close and
repeatedly through nasal fluid and mouth droplets from someone affected by leprosy
not treated. Children are more likely to get leprosy than adults.

What is the cause of leprosy?
Leprosy is caused by a type of slow-growing bacteria called Mycobacterium
 leprae (M. leprae). Leprosy is also known as Hansen's disease, after which scientist
named Hansen found M. leprae in 1873.

What are the other symptoms of leprosy?
Leprosy primarily affects the skin and nerves outside the brain and spinal cord,
called peripheral nerves / peripheral nerves. Leprosy can also attack the eyes and thin tissue
which coats the inside of the nose.

It usually takes about 3 to 5 years to show symptoms after
contact with bacteria that causes leprosy. Some people do not experience symptoms until 20
years later. The time between contact with bacteria and the appearance of symptoms is called the incubation period. This long incubation period of leprosy makes it extremely difficult for doctors to determine when and where people with leprosy are infected.
